PHP Developer - October 19th, 2006
A happy thing happened one year ago today - the PHP community was given the gift of symfony. Today (the 19th) marks the one year birthday of the launch of the symfony website and project.
The website was launched on October 19th, 2005, and it has rapidly gained a tremendous success. The adoption rate of the framework has been incredible since the beginning, and went far beyond our hopes. Today, we read about symfony in the press and on the Internet every day, new websites using it launch in many countries. We read a lot of very positive reviews about the framework but, more important, we read or hear about successful projects using symfony, and these real use cases are a proof that the framework reaches its goals.
Many congrats go out to the entire team over there! Keep up the great work!

php|architect has officially announce their next conference - this year’s php|tek - with the release of their new conference website.
The conference will be held in Chicago this year, moving from it’s previous, more northern location. The conference starts on tuesday, May 15th with a day of in-depth tutorials and goes through the 18th full of talks and time for developers to enjoy being with other developers. Registration is already open for the even, and prices start at around $700 USD.
If you want to get involved in the conference and present at talk, you’re in luck too. The Call for Papers is already open for your submissions. There’s no specific tracks that the talks need to fit into. They go for the tagging-based approach to let conference-goers know what the contents of the talks are.

In the neverending stream of interview that comes out of the Zend Developer Zone, Cal Evans is back with notes from his talk with Jeremy Johnstone, a speaker at this year’s OSCON.
I had nothing on Jeremy, all I knew was that he was speaking at OSCON and he worked at Yahoo. As it turns out, it was a very interesting interview. Not for the normal reasons though. If you want more, you’ll have to come inside and read the interview.
Well, I’ll cheat a bit and tell you some of the topics they talked about such as:
- Jeremey’s experience and background
- his experience at Yahoo!
- some of the work he’s done there (including the Address Book application)
- Yahoo!’s move to PHP 5
- everyone’s favorite topic - “disaster recovery”
That’s all I’m giving you, though - for the rest, you’ll need to check out the full interview.
