Cal Evans, interviewer extraordinaire has the results of a little Q&A time with one of the speakers of the upcoming Zend/PHP Conference and Expo - Aaron Wormus.
Aaron will be presenting at Zend PHP/Conference and Expo this year so I thought it would be fun to talk to him a bit about his presentations. So I called him. Luckily for me, I did this early in the morning CST so I caught him just after his afternoon nap.
They quickly talk about Aaron’s talk (”Moving to PHP5 With Style”), what to expect from it, why anyone would want to make the move from PHP4 to PHP5, and his favorite feature og PHP5. But you’ll just have to read the interview to find that one out.

Do you have your own interesting project kicking around you’ve been working on but hasn’t gotten much notice. Well, you might want to check out this mini-contest that Paul Reinheimer is doing to help bring more of them to light.
I’ve made a small post to the general forum at PHP|Arch asking people to post a link to any side projects they might be currently working on.
The author (or authors) of the one(s) i like best will receive a free copy of my book, signed if so desired. Anyways, I’m just asking for a link to whatever you’re working on already, so there’s no effort required, go post!
The only comment so far in the forum post is Paul’s own, but he talks about his imageBoxer script that combines images in a directory into a collage dynamically.

With frameworks growing more and more popular, especially in the PHP community, it’s good that major sites are working up tutorials to shwo their readers how to work with them. One such tutorial is this look at the CakePHP framework over on Developer.com.
In this first installment of a two-part series I’ll introduce to how the aptly-named CakePHP framework can make implementing such features a total breeze, using the theme of a fantasy football application as the basis for introduction. In this article I’ll implement the first two aforementioned features, and in the second we’ll build additional features into the application, adding user authentication and allowing others to maintain their roster.
They don’t teach you about the MVC pattern of design (Model/View/Controller), so you’ll need to become aquainted with it. After that, though, they give you all you’ll need - the table schemas, how to set up the scaffolding, creating the models and controller, and some data to help you fill in the details.

On the Zend Developer Zone today, there’s an interview with the co-authors of the recently released book from php|architect, the Zend Certification Study Guide.
The new Zend Certification Study Guide is out and the initial reviews look good. Since this was a topic of interest to me (mainly because I’ve yet to take the test) I decided to dig a little deeper. I fired up my recorder and called Davey Shafik and Ben Ramsey, the authors of the new guide, to talk to them. Here to give you a little of the back story is our conversation.
They talk about:
- the release of the book
- some of the contents of the chapters (including the sample chapter on security)
- Davey’s experience with the exam/Ben’s use of his PHP4 certification in his work
- and the practice tests that php|architect is offering to get developers prepared.
