PHP Developer - October 31st, 2006
On the PHPWomen site, there’s an interview with two of the founding members of the group - Ligaya Turmelle and Elizabeth Naramore.
I’m pleased to present the first of many planned interviews for the phpWomen site. I am starting the series at the beginning. My two victims, er… guests, started the frenzy that has become phpWomen.org.
The questions vary from where they went to college out to what they expected from the PHP Women group and what they see of the future of PHP. Check out the full interview for the complete details.

Ben Ramsey has posted his own wrapup of the first day of the Zend/PHP Conference & Expo and some of his thoughts on the keynote talk given by Andi, Zeev, et al.
The first day of the Zend/PHP Conference and Expo (the day of tutorials) was great. I sat in on Robert Richards’s Advanced XML and Web Services and Marcus’s and Sara’s Extending PHP tutorials. I multi-tasked as best I could, catching up on some work while finishing my slides and listening to the presentations.
He comments on the talks he’s attended (like Robert Richards’ XML/Web services talk and the contents of the keynote - including the announcements of the collaborations with Microsoft, IBM, and the new advancements that Zend has made with their products.

Andi Gutmans of Zend has posted a new item on his Blogspot blog today concerning one of the announcements that Zend made today in their keynote - the collaboration between Zend and Microsoft to get PHP working even better with Windows.
Today we announced a partnership with Microsoft. The goal of this technical collaboration is to make PHP on Windows a first class citizen. It has always been our goal to make PHP run well on any platform, and this initiative reinforces that. Both companies have also observed huge interest both from the community and our respective customers bases in good PHP support on Windows, and therefore, collaborating on making this happen is a no-brainer for both.
He mentions that it’s not the first time that Zend and Microsoft have collaborated, but that this new effort will go far and above the previous effort. He goes on to talk about what the partnership means for both companies and the steps that are being made to get the functionality stable and out to the community.

Part of this demo is measuring the performance gains we’ve made. To simulate load on the application, I’ll be using an application called ‘WCat’, short for Web Capacity Analysis tool. It is a VERY powerful tool, and we’ll only be scratching the surface of what it can do.
He talks about what he did to prepare for the demo, including the software he uses and how some of it is configured. Following that, it’s all about the process - installing PHP on IIs7, installing the FastCGI module and setting up caching for the PHP applications. There’s also screenshots included the whole way to show what screens, like the request graphing,
