php|architect has a quick note for those attending or even thinking about attending their php/db|works conference in September - the latest edition of the Zend Certified Engineer test (the PHP5 version) will be available.
The new exam, which will be launched at the end of August and will be available at php|works for the first time, includes a new scope that has been updated to include PHP 5 topics, such as the new OOP functionality.
A free webcast is also mentioned for those interested to know more about the test. If you’d like to find out more about the conference, check out the official page off of the php|architect site.

In another report from this year’s O’Reilly Open Source Convention, Kevin Yank has covered Rasmus Lerdorf’s talk - “Getting Rich with PHP 5″ - a look at building rich web applications in PHP5.
PHP’s creator, Rasmus Lerdorf, gave a surprising talk on building PHP rich web applications using PHP5—suprising, because fully half the talk focused on low-level PHP optimization techniques. The slides are available online.
Kevin gives an overview of the talk, mentioning some of Rasmus’ examples, the bottlenecks he defined, and the time spent on the new functionality in the PHP 5 series.

If you’re as big of a fan of the DokuWiki wiki software as Norbert Mocsnik, you’ll be very happy to check out his latest post on his blog about setting up the simple form of authentication in the application.
In my opinion DokuWiki is the best wiki software out there (see features). In addition to all those cool features like namespaces, it stores pages in plaintext files, thus no database backend is required. Setting it up is pretty easy also. I promised to investigate the steps needed to set up DokuWiki with the simplest authentication scheme for a friend and I thought others might benefit from it too, so here it is.
He starts from, well, the beginning - grabbing the latest DokuWiki download, copying it over and running through the installation and configuration. Then it’s on to the web inferface, changing the Access Controls to allow for more of a fine tuning on who can do what.

Cal Evans is back today with his latest “live” recap from the floor of this year’s O’Reilly Open Source Convention, this time with the happenings of Day Three.
Wow, how times files when you are having fun. After I finished yesterday’s wrap-up, I sat through most of the opening session that included Tim O’Reilly’s Radar. It was an interesting parade of up and comers who Tim thought we should know about. Unfortunately, none of them were PHP based so it’s really not germane to this post. Before it ended I had to duck out anyhow for an interview with Theo Schlossnagle of OmniTI.
They talked about a wide range of subjects, before Theo had to give a talk. By then, though, the conference hall was opened - including access to the vendors (and their swag). Cal also mentions the Lightning Talks (given by Laura Thomson and Zac Greant) as well as Marcus Borger’s “presentation” consisting of asking the audience what they wanted to hear about.
